Africa should take decisive steps to play a leading role in the financing of the capacity building efforts in the continent, the Permanent Committee of the Board of Governors of the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) on Resource Mobilization has said.
At an inaugural meeting of the committee in Lomé, Togo on the 4-5 November, the ACBF was told of the importance of getting political support by African countries on the Foundations resource mobilization efforts. It was also agreed that ACBF works towards the continuation and consolidation of cooperation with multilateral and non-African partners.
“There was an urgent need for Africans to take the driver’s seat in the financing of ACBF,” said the ACBF Executive Secretary, Prof Emmanuel Nnadozie. He added that there was also an increasing donor fatigue of non-African partners”.
At the same meeting, Togo’s Minister in the Office of the President, in charge of Long-Term Planning and Evaluation of Public Policies, and Chair of the Committee, Prof. Kako Nubukpo said capacity building was important for African countries as they move through various stages of economic transformation.
The Committee agreed to engage African Heads of State in addressing the financing challenges for capacity building and decided to solicit one of them to champion this cause with his peers and the international community. It was agreed the committee starts the engagement with Togo’s President, Faure Gnassingbé, to solicit his leadership.
